Welcome to the Turnstone Class

Welcome to Year 3 – Turnstones

We are so excited to welcome you and your child to Turnstone class. Year 3 is a fun-filled and busy year, full of opportunities to grow, flourish and shine. Together, we will succeed as a team, embrace new challenges, and continue on our St Peter’s journey!

Meet the Year 3 Team

Class Teacher: Mrs Boot

Teaching Assistants: Mrs Jones (Tuesday – Friday afternoons) and Mrs Burgess (Monday – Friday mornings)

Cover Teacher: Mr Pickles covers the class on a Wednesday morning every week, when he will teach PE and computing. Every other week on a Wednesday, he will teach for the full day.

Our dedicated staff are here to support, encourage, and guide your child every step of the way.

Reading in Year 3

This year marks the beginning of our Accelerated Reader (AR) programme. After finishing a book, children take a short quiz to check their understanding of what they’ve read.

Reading aloud to an adult is invaluable in helping children to build confidence and fluency.

  • Children should aim to read their AR book to you at least three times a week. Please sign their reading record when you hear your child read and add any comments if you wish to.
  • Please ensure your child brings their reading record and books to school daily.
  • Please let us know if reading at home becomes difficult — we are here to help.

Children should be encouraged to read a variety of texts and should also be read to (e.g. a bedtime story) just for the enjoyment of reading.

Your child can change their reading book as and when they need to, and library books can be chosen and exchanged every Thursday.

Homework & Practice

Alongside reading, children will:

  • receive weekly spelling and handwriting practice. This will be given on a Wednesday and needs to be returned by Tuesday.
  • be encouraged to access Times Tables Rockstars to practise their times tables and be set times tables challenges.
  • occasionally bring home additional homework linked to the wider curriculum.

PE and Swimming

  • PE: Tuesday afternoons (with Mrs Boot) and Wednesday mornings (with Mr Pickles).

Children need their P.E. kit in school at all times as there are often extra opportunities to get outside and get active. In the winter, plain black leggings/joggers and a jumper are useful as we will try to go outside whenever possible. Please can you make sure that all items are clearly labelled.

  • Swimming: Tuesday mornings, starting after the Easter break.

We will provide further information about swimming (e.g. what kit to bring) closer to the time.

Music Opportunities

After Christmas, Year 3 pupils will have the chance to learn the Ukulele.

  • lessons take place weekly.
  • children will bring their Ukulele home to practise what they have learned in class.

This is a wonderful opportunity to develop new skills and confidence in music.

Class Trip

To consolidate our learning about the Stone Age, our class will have the opportunity to visit Leighton Hall and learn how Stone Age people lived in the spring or summer term (details on dates and costs will be circulated closer to the time).

Working Together

We are committed to making Year 3 a positive and successful experience for every child. If you have any questions, worries, or ideas, please speak to a member of the Turnstones team - we are always happy to help. If you require a longer appointment, please arrange this via the school office.
