Welcome to Year 6
We hope you’ve all had a restful and enjoyable summer break and that your children are feeling refreshed and ready for their exciting (and busy!) final year at St. Peter's.
Year 6 is a unique and important year, full of new responsibilities, opportunities and preparation for secondary school. Please find below some key information about the year ahead.
Independence and Responsibility
In Year 6, we place a strong emphasis on developing independence, maturity and organisational skills in preparation for high school.
The children will take on a variety of responsibilities across the school, including supporting younger pupils at lunchtime, helping staff with key responsibilities and setting a positive example to the rest of the school through their behaviour, manners and smart appearance.
Over the next few weeks, pupils will also have the opportunity to take on leadership roles such as House Captains, School Councillors and Worship Leaders.
We want our Year 6 pupils to recognise that being the oldest children in school comes with both privileges and responsibilities, and we know they will rise to the challenge.
Homework and Reading Expectations
Each child has been given a Homework and Reading Diary, which will be updated daily with information about the subjects covered and any homework that has been set.
Homework will typically consist of:
- An arithmetic task
- A reading comprehension activity
- Spellings and sentence writing
Children are also expected to read for at least 20 minutes, three times a week, where possible. Reading should be recorded in their diary on the page opposite their homework.
- Homework is set every Friday and should be returned the following Monday.
- If homework cannot be completed for any reason, please write a note in your child’s diary or pop in to speak to us.
We appreciate that this may feel like a step up from previous years, but these expectations are an important part of preparing our pupils for the increased homework, independence and responsibility they will experience at high school.
We like to think of it as “tough love” - supporting the children to develop the habits and resilience they will need to succeed.

PE Information
PE lessons will take place on Thursdays and Fridays. Mr Pickles will teach P.E. on a Thursday morning.
Please ensure that your child has a labelled PE kit in school at all times, stored in a named PE bag.
Looking Ahead
Year 6 is a hugely important year - academically, socially and emotionally.
It is a year of preparing for SATs, closing learning gaps, developing independence, getting ready for the transition to high school and, perhaps most importantly, growing into confident, capable and responsible young people.
There will be challenges along the way, but there will also be plenty of laughter, exciting opportunities and lots to celebrate.
We know that your children are going to thrive, and we feel truly privileged to be part of their final year at primary school. We are incredibly excited to see what they can achieve.
