Y3 Black History Visit May 2023

Last week, Year 3 were visited by Geraldine Onek and Professor Alan Rice who have developed the 'Facing The Past' project . The project aims to 'reflect, reveal, and redress omissions in our collective memory about Transatlantic Slave and West Indies Trades and the enslaved people who came through or stayed in Lancaster. ' The children ( and adults!) were fascinated to learn about a young boy who, around 250 years ago, was taken from West Africa and was enslaved in the house of the Reverend, Mr. Clarkson, Rector at Heysham. Due to the markings on his face, we know that he belonged to the Ebo Country. However, his name was not known. Therefore, as part of the project he now been given a name he deserves: Afamefuna meaning 'My name will not be lost.'
